MELPOMENE, MUSE OF TRAGEDY
Italy, 19th Century

inscribed to base “Melpomen”

marble

height 66 cm | 26 in

This finely carved marble bust depicts Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, identifiable by the inscription to the base and her idealised classical features. Crowned with vine leaves and grapes, she draws upon Greco-Roman iconography while reflecting the enduring neoclassical fascination with antiquity in late eighteenth-century Italy.

The composition bears comparison with celebrated neoclassical interpretations of the subject, notably Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Melpomene (modelled in the early nineteenth century), which similarly reimagines the tragic muse through a purified classical idiom.

Executed with refinement in the treatment of the hair, drapery, and physiognomy, the present work was conceived in the spirit of the antique, combining archaeological reverence with the decorative elegance prized by Grand Tour collectors.
