LION FOUNTAIN HEAD MASK
Central Italy, 16th Century

marble

31 x 24 cm | 12 1/4 x 9 1/2 in

Carved in marble with striking expressiveness, the present lion mask was conceived as a fountain element, designed to animate the architectural surface through the interplay of sculpture and flowing water. The leonine visage, with its forceful modelling and open mouth intended as a water spout, reflects the enduring Renaissance fascination with antique Roman fountain design, where such masks served both decorative and symbolic functions. Emblematic of strength, vigilance, and protection, the lion remained a favoured motif in Italian architectural ornament, lending both theatricality and authority to gardens, courtyards, and palatial interiors.
