PAIR OF ARCHITECTURAL RELIEFS
Tuscany, early 16th Century

marble

132 x 25 x 8.5 cm | 51 7/8 × 9 7/8 × 3 3/8 in.

Finely carved in low relief, this elegant pair of marble architectural panels reflects the refined ornamental vocabulary of the Tuscan Renaissance. Each is centred on a vertical candelabrum composition of scrolling foliage, stylised blossoms, and classical urn motifs, arranged with the balanced symmetry characteristic of early sixteenth-century architectural decoration. Derived from the decorative language of the antique and widely employed in Renaissance interiors and façades, such reliefs demonstrate the enduring influence of Roman ornamental models as reinterpreted through Tuscan craftsmanship. Their elongated proportions suggest an original function as architectural elements, possibly framing a doorway, niche, or interior decorative scheme.
